Two Conference Presentations by Ilgın Gökaşar

Ilgın Gökaşar’s conference paper entitled “Insights into the Impact of COVID-19 on Bicycle Usage in Colorado Counties” has been accepted for the Transportation Research Board 100th Annual Meeting which will be conducted on January 2021.

In this study, the change in the usage of bicycling – for pre- and post-pandemic periods -- using opendata sources, are investigated. Additionally, influence of the characteristics of socio-economics of the bike users, are also inspected.

 

New publication by Nilüfer Özyurt Zihnioğlu

The paper entitled “Post-fire mechanical behavior and recovery of structural reinforced concrete beams” of Dr. Nilüfer Özyurt Zihnioglu has been accepted for publication in Construction and Building Materials.  This study was supported by Boğaziçi University Research Fund [Project Code 14A04D2].

EBRD Training Completed Successfully

Prof. Cem Avcı was part of the training team who undertook 4 day training session conducted for the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) in October 30th -November 2nd 2019. The training was aimed at improving the understanding and managing social risk in Projects and acquiring knowledge and developing practical skills in the implementation of EBRD Requirements. The attendees included Public and Private Sector Employees, Social Impact Experts, Health & Safety Experts, Environmental Management Experts, Investment Advisors.

 

Conference: Cement-Based Materials for a Sustainable Future

International Conference on “Cement – Based Materials Tailored for a Sustainable Future” will take place in Boğaziçi University with the participation of world – renowned scholars and experts. The conference aims to gather researchers and industrial experts from around the world who specialize on cement-based materials to share and spread knowledge in an effort to increase awareness on the importance of the sustainable cementitious systems. 

BAP project “Analysis of Physiological Risk Factors for Occupational Accidents in Construction Industry” by Dr. Semra Çomu Yapıcı

D-Coded BAP project “Analysis of Physiological Risk Factors for Occupational Accidents in Construction Industry” was recently awarded to Dr. Semra Çomu Yapıcı. The first stage of data collection was completed by the  Ph.D. candidate, Gökhan Kazar.

Dr. Selamet presented at ICEARC

Dr. Serdar Selamet delivered a workshop on Fire Engineering for International Civil Engineering and Architecture Conference (ICEARC) in Trabzon, Turkey on 17-20 April, 2019. He also presented a conference proceeding co-authored  with Aykut Onursal on 16. The proceeding was entitled “Stability of Steel Portal Frames in Industrial Buildings Under Natural Fire Conditions”.

Dr. Nilüfer Özyurt Zihnioğlu collaborates on recently awarded 1001 Project!

A new TÜBİTAK 1001 project with the collaboration of Özyeğin University, Boğaziçi University and Sabancı University was accepted. An automated  system enabling additive manufacturing of fiber cement-based composites will be developed in the scope of the project. Results and dissemination of the work will significantly contribute to the state-of-art and be one of the pioneering studies leading the technological advancement of additive manufacturing in construction.

 

In Memoriam: Mete Sözen

It is with great saddness that we have learned the passing away of our colleague Mete A. Sözen.

After having graduated from Robert College (RC'51), Dr. Sözen obtained his PhD form the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He served on the Faculty of UIUC for most of his tenure, he last held the position of Kettelhut Distinguished Professor of Structural Engineering at Purdue University. 

His impact on the prrofession has been recognized though many prestigious awards including and honorary doctorate from Boğaziçi University.
