Civil Engineering PhD Program comprises a minimum of 24 credits of course work which should be completed in 4 semesters and a thesis. Students with non-CE backgrounds first have to take remedial courses in addition to their regular Ph.D. program. The remedial courses will be selected by the Department Board depending on student’s background and research interest. Students in the Ph.D. program are required to maintain a grade point average of at least 3.00/4.00 throughout their coursework. Each Ph.D. student must pass a qualifying exam and prepare a thesis proposal. The qualifying examination has two parts: written exam and oral exam. A student who passes the qualifying examination must prepare a thesis proposal in 6 months. The student has a maximum of 4 semesters to complete the coursework and a maximum of 12 semesters to complete the Ph.D. program.
