International Students
APPLICATION TO GRADUATE PROGRAMS
Students holding Bachelor's degrees are eligible to apply for Master's programs and those holding Master's degrees are eligible to apply for doctoral programs at Bogazici University.
A. Admission to the MS in Civil Engineering [Master of Science] Program:
Minimum requirements for application are:
1. A grade point average of 2.50/4.00 or its equivalent during undergraduate study.
2. Minimum GRE Quantitative Score of 153 or ALES Quantitative Score of 75 [ALES is a nationally administered exam in Turkish: http://www.osym.gov.tr/TR,8852/hakkinda.html].
3. Proof of English proficiency as required by Boğaziçi University. The exams that are accepted and the minimum scores required for application are:
- 3a. BUEPT (Bogazici University English Proficiency Test): Minimum Score of 60. This test is administered by the Bogazici University School of Foreign Language several times a year. BUEPT scores are valid for two years. [http://www.yadyok.boun.edu.tr/index-eng.htm]
- 3b. TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): Minimum Scores of 550 + TWE 4.5 (paper-based) or 79 + TWE 22 (internet-based). This test is administered several times a year in many countries by the American Educational Testing Service and is valid for two years. A Test of Written English (TWE) is also given by YADYOK on the same day as the BUEPT. YADYOK TWE Pass is equivalent to TOEFL TWE scores indicated above.
- 3c. IELTS (International English Language Testing System): Academic Score of 6.5 + Academic Writing Score of 6.5. This test is given by the British Council and is valid for two years.
Candidates who satisfy the minimum requirements listed above may apply to the program and all those who may apply will be considered in the Departmental evaluation which includes an oral exam/interview with the faculty. The final admissions list is announced after the completion of the Departmental evaluation.
B. Admission to the Ph.D. in Civil Engineering [Doctor of Philosophy] Program:
Minimum requirements for application are:
1. A grade point average of 3.00/4.00 or its equivalent during undergraduate study.
2. Minimum GRE Quantitative Score of 155 or ALES Quantitative Score of 75 [ALES is a nationally administered exam in Turkish: http://www.osym.gov.tr/TR,8852/hakkinda.html].
3. Proof of English proficiency as required by Boğaziçi University. The exams that are accepted and the minimum scores required for application are:

4. Proof of English proficiency as required by Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK). YÖK requires a minimum score of 55 in YDS/ÜDS/KPDS exams or equivalent scores on other exams recognized by YÖK [http://dokuman.osym.gov.tr/pdfdokuman/2016/GENEL/EsdegerlikTablosu25022016.pdf]. Note: As BUEPT / IELTS / two year exemption rule for Bogazici University graduates are not accepted by YÖK, they will not automatically satisfy the YDS/ÜDS/KPDS requirement.

C. Admission to the School of Foreign Languages for Graduate Students:
(i) Students holding Bachelor's and Master's degrees and applying to the Bogazici University graduate programs at the beginning of the academic year are might be eligible to study English Language for one year at the Bogazici University School of Foreign Languages prior to starting the graduate program they have been admitted to. These students can continue their graduate education upon successful completion of their English preparatory year.
(ii) Students applying to the graduate programs in the second semester can take the exam in their own field given by the institutes they have applied to only if they have obtained the required scores on the Bogazici University English Proficiency Test or one of the international tests cited above. Students applying for admission to graduate programs for the second semester of the academic year will not be admitted to the School of Foreign Languages.
D. Documents Required for Application:
(i) Official transcripts sent directly to the Bogazici University Registrar’s Office from the university the applicant has graduated from. The document should indicate all the courses taken and the grades received throughout the applicant’s undergraduate or Master’s study.
(ii) Two reference letters from professors familiar with the applicant’s academic standing.
(iii) Graduates of Turkish Universities need to submit an official statement pertaining to their disciplinary record.
(iv) A copy of the original diploma.
(v) Proof of English proficiency as per explained in previous items.
(v) GRE/ALES score sheets.

E. Application Process:
The application process is composed of several stages:
A. Online Application: The complete application must be submitted online at adaylar.boun.edu.tr/en-EN/Page/AdmissionRegister
B. Initial Screening: Applications are screened by the faculty members for minimum requirements and completeness of the application package.
C. Invitation to the Departmental Exam (Oral Exam/Interview): Applicants that satisfy the minimum requirements are invited by the Department for an academic interview.
D. Submission of the Information Sheet: Applicants who have invited to the interview are required to fill an Information Sheet (a questionnaire form) out and submit it on time to the Departmental Advisor for Graduate Admissions.
E. Departmental Exam: Applicants who have been invited to the interview and submitted their information sheet on time will be interviewed by the faculty members of the Department at an announced date and location. The aim of the interview is to bring together the faculty members with the applicants and thereby to get to know the applicants’ background, technical knowledge, academic interests, and future plans.
F. Announcement of the Results: The admissions are announced by the Institute of Graduate Studies in Science and Engineering.
G. Registration: The admitted applicants must complete their process by submitting the required documents during registration to be able to register.
