Cold formed steel structures to be included in the new earthquake code

Cold formed steel (CFS) structures have become more and more popular in recent years mainly because of their very high strength to weight ratio. In addition to advances worldwide in this field, a chapter on CFS structures will be included in the 2016 version of Turkish Seismic Design Guideline, which will very probably increase the number of CFS structures constructed in Turkey as well. Therefore, with the aim of creating knowledge in our country and with the contributions of different firms and Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), experimental and analytical studies have been carried out in the Structures Laboratory for the last two years. These studies include (i) cyclic test on panels to obtain strength and ductility under different configurations of steel thickness, sheeting and connection spacing; (ii) ambient, forced and cyclic tests on three dimensional structure (two story structure with the plan dimensions of 2.4 m x 3.6 m).
